Music is the thing that fills the space between.
I can’t remember a time when music didn’t fill the air and propel the energy within me and around me.
Both of my parents were avid listeners of many different forms and styles of music, so I was fortunate to be exposed to a very eclectic background soundtrack in the home growing up, as well as being encouraged at every age by my parents to play an Instrument and to pursue the study of music at a deeper level.
significant events in my life… related to my journey with music…
Age 6 – began study of piano, and performed in recitals 4 times a year.
Age 11- moved to Los Angeles.
Age 12- went to my first large “arena” size “rock” concert… CHIC at Santa Monica Civic!
Age 12- got my first boombox with duel dubbing cassette recorders, which started my obsession with “producing” mix tapes.
Age 13- went to my first BIG rock show… Van Halen at LA Sports Arena!
Age 14- got my first electric guitar, quit piano lessons, and played in my first band, which won first prize
at the 8th grade talent show… beating out the cheerleaders!
Age 18- enrolled in the “A.R.M.S” program at CSU Dominguez Hills, which stands for “Audio Recording Music Synthesis Option”… a comprehensive program combining all of the traditional aspects of a music degree program with the study of state of the art recording and music production techniques of the time.
Age 22- graduated with a BA in Music, got my first “recording studio” gig, not at a commercial music studio, but at an emerging post production sound studio called EFX Systems, which billed itself as the “first All digital post studio”… which, whether entirely true or not, this facility was utilizing revolutionary new techniques for sound design, editorial, and mixing, using synclaviers and digital tape machines among other things… In this environment, I was not only exposed to the cutting edge of technology but also able to learn from and work with, first hand, some of the most talented people in the business.
This began a sound editing career which I’ve been fortunate to enjoy for 34 years, working for studios
such as Skywalker Sound South, Todd-AO, Sony, Warner Brothers and many others…
earning 4 Golden Reel Awards, and 14 Emmy Nominations for outstanding achievement in Sound Editing.
Age 26- played first club gigs in and around LA… The Whiskey, The Roxy, The Cat Club, The Central,
The Coconut Teaszer, Raji’s, Al’s Bar, Mr. T’s Bowl, and many others… with such bands as Substation, SuperModel #9, guava, drugstore alibi, peopleinhellwanticewater, misunderstood monsters…
None of which achieved large scale success, or financial gains, but provided plenty of adventure! And I have continued to play, write, record, and produce with local bands, covering a wide variety of tastes styles,
for my entire life.
Age 28- began producing a live show series with 2 other friends and band collaborators called “The Millennium Cabaret” which featured performance art, local bands, dj’s, artists, etc…
All put on in lofts in the heart of Hollywood, above Playmates, and at 1231 North Vine,
Vas Llegas, as well as in lofts downtown such as the Morrison Hotel and places in the arts district. In addition to putting on and organizing the events, and our band performing (SuperModel #9)
we also worked with such bands as Quetzal, Ozomotli, Royal Crown Revue, Weapon of Choice, and many others.
I have been very fortunate, and blessed to work with, and learn from, some extremely creative and talented people throughout my entire life, across many fields, including musical composition, performance, and production, live event production, and sound design for film and television, and I am grateful for every last one of them.
On this premise, I have been fortunate (yet again!) to be given the opportunity to work with another group of extremely talented, professional people… dedicated to their craft, and to the presentation of a quality kick-ass show!
Stevie And The HeartRockers!
Who’s Mission is to honor and pay proper homage to some of the greatest and most impactful songwriters, and two of the greatest bands, not only of our generation, but arguably of ALL time!
Count Me In! 😀
